For centuries Riesling has been one of the world’s finest and most sought after grape varieties, yet Riesling remains the most misunderstood grape varietal in the United States, due at least in part to the predominance of inexpensive, low alcohol, sugary Rieslings that pervaded the American market in the 1960s and 1970s. The 2022 Gruber Röschitz By Nature Niederösterreich Riesling bears no resemblance to the Rieslings of yesteryear. Pale yellow in color and delicately floral with the scents of white peach, green apple, and lemon zest, the organically produced 2022 By Nature Riesling exudes vitality and charm. Initially soft and delicate in the mouth, almost spritely, Gruber’s 2022 Röschitz Riesling graces the palate with lovely floral flavors before the wine’s minerality and refreshing acidity emerge in the form of a citrus twist. The youthful, but balanced, 2022 Gruber Röschitz By Nature Riesling comes together nicely, finishing with a flourish and exiting with verve and vitality. Serve this comely Riesling moderately chilled (40º-42º F) and then allow it to open, slowly shedding its chill. Anticipated maturity: 2023-2027. Enjoy!
Our first reaction is almost always to pair wine with food. In the case of the 2022 Gruber Röschitz By Nature Niederösterreich Riesling, the panel was nearly unanimous in its enjoyment of this wine on its own as well as with food. Nevertheless, several accompaniments are clear standouts. One can easily choose a traditional Viennese specialty, such as a pork or veal schnitzel, to accompany the 2022 By Nature Riesling and be more than satisfied. Green-tipped New Zealand mussels, served in a saffron broth, sushi and sashimi, and just about anything that once inhabited the sea also merit two thumbs up with the Gruber family’s spritely Riesling. Most traditional teriyaki dishes, too, also offer first-rate partners. Roast turkey with all of the trimmings provides another tasty companion. And we are fond of consuming the exuberant 2022 Gruber Röschitz By Nature Riesling after dinner or any time of day with apples, grapes, pears, and a platter of soft ripe cheeses. Guten Appetit!
The Gruber family, located in the tiny village of Röschitz in Austria’s Weinviertal wine region, fashion compelling Riesling and Grüner Veltliner from organic grapes grown in their own vineyards. Each family owned and run winery possesses its own story. In the case of the Gruber family, we are delighted to let them tell their own unique tale:
“We go further together… and work with each other for one collective goal: To make authentic wines in our homeland Röschitz in Weinviertal. Whether in the vineyards, cellar or marketing, we share the work and prosper together. All along the way, we have been inspired and supported by our parents and grandparents. That’s right, it is Family Business.
“Since 2013, we have been using organic methods to cultivate the various plots of land in our winery. We do it out of conviction, not because it is in fashion. The extra hard work it demands (and less yield) reimburses us with more identity and character in our wines: Allowing nature to take the reins, we promote the self-healing powers of the vines to support the most valuable resources – the soils of our homeland. We produce wines, the way we love them.”
We love them, too. Gruber’s wines are garnering international attention and critical acclaim with consistent 90+ point ratings in Europe. Taste and see for yourself why this organic producer has become so highly sought after!
