Château de Varennes is a magnificent property located in the flower bedecked village of Quincié-en-Beaujolais. The château dates from the 11th century and by the 14th century, under the lords of Beaujeu, Château de Varennes had become one of the region’s grandest estates, renowned for its excellent wine and agricultural prowess. Since 1809, the Charveriat family have owned and operated Château de Varennes, taking the estate to its present pinnacle among Beaujolais-Villages producers.
As is the case throughout Beaujolais, the Gamay grape reigns supreme at Château de Varennes where Gamay vines surround the hills around the château. Here Gamay thrives on the region’s granite soils. Château de Varennes is renowned for this month’s feature, the superb 2022 Château de Varennes Beaujolais-Villages. Taste and see!
Beaujolais is situated in the extreme south of Burgundy. It is a vast region of nearly two hundred villages and communes, which are spread out on varying subsoil and individual terroir. Unofficially, Beaujolais forms the dividing line between northern and southern France. Straddling the un-specified equivalent of the American Mason-Dixon Line, the wines of Beaujolais flow in copious quantities north to Paris and south to Lyon and beyond.
In spite of the inherent variations in quality and style, which reflect the differences in soil composition, altitude, and level of production among the region’s thousands of growers, one common denominator comes to fore in Beaujolais – the Gamay grape. Gamay grown in the region’s granite-rich soil provides the defining character and flavor of all Beaujolais, and nowhere is this more the case than among the finest purveyors of Beaujolais-Villages and the 10 village crus of Beaujolais where the juicy, vinous fruit of Gamay bursts forth to the delight of connoisseurs and neophytes alike.
